Veterans Tip of the Week – Veterans Burial Benefits – Have the Talk!
In response to a question on the subject, this week’s tip comes while on location at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, ME. (https://www11.maine.gov/…/memoria…/southern-maine/index.html)
I was struck by the beauty and serenity of the grounds and actually visited because of the numerous signs along all the main roads, including I-95 and RT-1.
The VA offers two basic burial support programs for eligible veterans (above a dishonorable discharge) – Interment in one of 138 national cemeteries (across 40 states and Puerto Rico); and, Provision of a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, regardless of burial location (Fed, state or private), at no cost to the family. https://www.cem.va.gov/burial_benefits/
For other eligible veterans there is a limited Burial and Plot Interment Allowance to assist with funeral expenses. ($300 for general funeral expenses and $796 for plot related expenses). https://www.benefits.va.gov/BENEFITS/factsheets/…/Burial.pdf
Many states also have burial benefits for eligible veterans:
Maine – https://www.maine.gov/…/benef…/survivors-benefits/index.html
New Hampshire – http://www.nhsvc.com/
Massachusetts – https://www.sec.state.ma.us/cis/cisvet/vetburia.htm
Vermont – https://veterans.vermont.gov/…/veteran-benefits/mortuary-an…
Rhode island – http://www.vets.ri.gov/includes/benefits/memorial/rivmc.php
Connecticut – https://portal.ct.gov/…/State-of-CT-Guide-to-Benef…/Benefits
If this is an issue you are facing or will be facing soon, I recommend you look into these resources before the need is upon you. The VA even has a “Pre-Need” eligibility determination program. https://www.cem.va.gov/cem/pre-need/index.asp
Another important consideration is survivor benefits. Check the Veterans Advice Hub for specific program, but they are generally listed here: https://www.va.gov/opa/persona/dependent_survivor.asp
As always, please feel free to PM me if you have questions regarding you VA Benefits. If I don’t know the answer, we will find it together. #gogetrated
